About tsunamis

Inviting and making arrangements


To be able to invite your business partners or arrange meeting with foreign friends you need to learn some phrases.





1.Learn the phrases:



Checking someone is free

Making invitations
Would you like to…?
Do you fancy + verb + ing?

Accepting invitations
Sounds great!
Yeah, I’d like/love to…
That’s be lovely!

Refusing invitations (apology + reason)
I’m afraid I can’t make it because…
I’m really sorry, but I can’t … because…

Suggesting a time/place to meet
Shall we meet outside the restaurant at eight?

Suggesting a different time/place to meet
How about +  ing… instead?

Could we meet… instead?

We generally use a noun or verb +ing after likes and dislikes phrases:

Films and TV series with different accents of English


To be a successful speaker you need to be able to differentiate accents of the English language: Received pronunciation, Scottish, Irish, American, Canadian, Australian.

The easiest way to get used to people speaking different accents is to watch films. Let’s look at some features of accents and examples of movies illustrating them.

Standard British or Received pronunciation(RP) is a “classical” variant or “gold standard” British pronunciation.

Characteristic features:
  • most of the sounds are produced in the front part of the mouth 
  • emphasis on long sounds [a:] dance [dɑːns] 
  • drop of “r” at the end of the words: mother, river [ˈrɪvə] 
  • short sound [ɪ] in –ry : secretary /ˈsek.rə.tər.i/
